Rope of all sizes, lengths and strengths are used extensively in every industry in the world today and it could be said that there is not any that would not use this very important item.
The use of rope was invented by prehistoric humans at least 28,000 years or more ago and that is what fossil findings have revealed. To hypothesize that they would have used wildtree twines which doubled up as ropes to serve the purpose for which they used it would not be far off mark. Since then the item we call today as rope, became an integral part of human civilizations down the ages around the world.
The gigantic structures that we see around us today which have been built by our ancestors hundreds of years ago would have had a rope helping them at some stage of construction.
We need to give our ancestors the benefit of any doubt because we would not have come into the 21st century with so much of knowledge if our prehistoric ancestors were stupid.
They would have used wildtree twines, but when they would have experienced that one wild tree twine was not sufficiently strong enough to get the job done they would have innovated. They would have braided two or more of the readily available wildtree twines and strengthened it, but additionally they could have gone a step further too.
Our prehistoric ancestors would have double braided the wild tree twines by wrapping the first braided with other wildtree twines to bring additional strength, which we refer to as Combination rope.
This may be a hypothesis but in the context a very possible one hence we need to raise our glasses in salute to our prehistoric ancestors. For the knowledge and ingenious way they invented and we follow the making of the all important Braided rope that we use extensively today.
Is Braided technology 20,000 years old?
This is very likely if we are to respect the ingenuity of our prehistoric ancestors and today the industry that uses some of the largest and strongest Braided rope is the marine industry.
The marine industry uses these large and strong ropes as they need to moor large ships at the harbor and that cannot be done by thread as we all know.
We could contemplate that the technology the marine industry are using today in their day to day chores which needs men and women made of sterner stuff to endure is from prehistoric beginnings.
It is common sense after all that rather than one thin thread, two or more would be stronger and this would have dawned on our ancestors 28,000 years ago, for sure.
Marine ropes
Marine ropes need to be very strong and their tensile strengths should be superlative to hold not only boats but ships too at the moor even when a storm strikes.
The marine industry would use anything from natural fiber to synthetic as long as they are able to get the appropriate tensile strength on the Braided rope. The strength should complement their endeavor at hand and no mishaps would be possible as it is ships that they are dealing with and there are no second chances. Of the different synthetic ropes that the marine industry uses it is Braided Polyester rope and braided polypropylene ropes that they popularly use.
These two are very practical in use and delivers optimum tensile strength to enable the mariners to go about their business with confidence. They would know very well that when they come back after an afternoon siesta their ship would not be in the middle of the sea, having broken off the moorings.
The Combination rope that mariners swear for all their hardiest of work are braided and then wrapped with another braid around it enhancing and providing immense strength.
Ropes and mariners are intertwined together and the first item that any rookie mariner is presented is a mariner’s rope, whichever size it may be.
A way with ropes
Mariners have a very close and special relationship with the Braided Polyester rope or any other that they would work with as their lives depend on ropes.
They need to know their ropes and if they don’t then they are not worthy mariners and that is the folklore that is related when they are in the high seas. This is why we laymen would see any mariner with ropes around him or her, where they would even have ropes in their trousers and even shirts.
A mariner could touch a rope and tell us a history about it if we dare ask him and that is how they are attached to their ropes. So it may be not be a surprise that even before the advent of sailing ships humans had their tryst with destiny and ropes.
Ropes unimaginable
It would be unimaginable to us to see the USS Enterprise moored at a harbor which would take some rope handling but it is done and that tells us the perseverance of mariners.
One of the largest aircraft carriers of the world has also to be moored and with nothing but ropes and that is the importance of rope in a mariner’s life.
We may be using small rope but mariners use some of the largest Braided ropes under the Sun in their daily chores.
That is the characters of all mariners and they could be one tough bunch and it is a tough job indeed but they still depend on a 28,000 year old invention even in the 21st century.
Our forefathers have given us much but they have given the mariners their daily bread and butter and they would remember that too.
So next time we take any braided polyester rope or any other rope to our hand we would need to reminisce that we are holding a 28,000 old history in our hands.
That is how old the story of the braided rope is.
